"It is a
pleasure for me to extend personal greetings to all friends of the
Model A on the occasion of our 15th Anniversary and to take this
space to reminisce about 1970 and 1971 when I served as President. I
recall several memorable events that occurred during those years.
After months of debate the Club finally purchased Walkie Talkies, we
were officially licensed and they became a regular part of our
outings in the summer of 1970.
This period was one of great
interest among many new Model A enthusiasts and our growing
membership exceeded 100 for the first time in 1970 and we expanded
the Club to seven geographical areas.
In addition to those
spirited debates over the Walkie Talkies we argued payments for
parades and weddings and finally set a Club policy for those events.
But the loudest and widest felt repercussions, I think in Club
history, were our endeavors to effect upon our legislatures a
multi-car use of a common antique license plate. This shook up
antique car buffs throughout the Commonwealth. Our Club had opened
"Pandora's Box". But this proved to be the spark needed in the
Spring of 1971 that fired up over 25 car clubs in the state to form
the Massachusetts Antique Auto Council; our eyes, ears, and the day
to come, to be our voice on Beacon Hill.
Since my joining the
Club in April 1968, Jackie, my children and I have had lots of happy
memories in Gramp's "Lizzie" (my '29 Tudor bought by my grandfather
new in 1929 and driven by him until his death in 1958). I left it
stored until 1966 and then through the help of my buddy, Paul Lord
of Springfield, it was returned to life. Out driving one Sunday we
were followed home by Warren and Allen Paul and I got introduced to
this happy group. This '29 was the first car I ever drove and it
brings many happy memories of recent years with the Club and of the
past in Vermont with its only other owner.
It's been a
pleasure for me to serve the Club and work with many friends over
the years."
