"The Model A holds a special interest in my life. It was the car readily available at the time I got my drivers license. It was 1935 and my father had a 1930 Tudor Sedan. It was in that car that I got my license. In those days you could buy a Model A anywhere from $10 up to $75, depending upon the condition. I remember purchasing a 1931 deluxe Sedan in 1938 for $25. I drove the car until I was inducted into the service during World War II.

It wasn't until 1952 that I acquired my next Model A. A man pulled into the garage where I was working with a 1930 Deluxe Roadster. He asked if anyone was interested in buying this car for $80. After I took the Roadster for a short spin, I told the man $50 was tops for a car in the condition it was in. He said he would be back if he couldn't get $80. The next week he returned with the car. My offer must have been right. This car still awaits my restoration. By 1955 I had purchased my second A, a 1929 Roadster. This car was a real workhorse. I used it to haul cement and lumber to build my cottage on Lake Wyola.

It was around 1957 when I joined the Model A Restorers Club of Hartford, Conn., which was founded by Bill Hall in 1952.

In late 1960, I first had the idea of forming a Western Mass. Region. In looking through the club roster, I felt that we had enough members to form a Region. I contacted two Amherst Model A owners, Robert Brown and Carl Richardson. We wrote to the National Club, which was in Detroit Michigan, for some information on forming a Region. With the information we received, we decided to seek out Model A owners who would be interested in joining a club.

So it was in early 1961 that we placed notices announcing a meeting for interested Model A owners in the Springfield and Northampton papers. We've been growing ever since. I'm sure our members will agree that the Model A will endure along with the Western Massachusetts Model A Restorers Club."

John Krawczyk Treasurer, Carl Richardson Secretary, Warren Christenson Historian, Peter Fessenden Meet Chairman, Walter Johnson "On January 19, 1963, I was installed as the 2nd President of the Western Mass. Region of the Model A Restorers Club at its First Annual Dinner. I held this office for two terms during the years 1963 and 1964. The slate of officers installed were: Vice President, John Krawczyk; Treasurer, Carl Richardson; and Secretary, Warren Christenson.
As a young pioneering Club, many of the ensuing meetings consisted of discussion as well as well as an exchange of ideas by the members on restoration of their respective cars, in addition to the solving of their various car problems. Almost everyone benefited from the others' experience. Other timely and pertinent business was discussed such as future car meets and outings, picnics were planned, and dates announced for the annual New England Meet and National Meet for common interest. In addition a committee was formed for the purpose of drawing up by-laws for our comparatively new organization. At one of the early meetings it was suggested that the Club have an annual banquet at the end of each term for a two-fold purpose. This would provide an opportunity for members' wives and friends to become interested in our activities as well as, to meet one another socially for an evening of fun and frolic. Also, this would be an ideal time to install a new slate of officers for the coming year. And thus, the Annual Banquet was born. The event took place on January 19, 1963 at Fran and Ed's Restaurant in Easthampton, which I arranged with the help of my committee and proved to be a huge success. The menu consisted of a choice of Roast Beef (would you believe) at $2.75 or Lobster at $3.50. It was an enjoyable evening with 45 members in attendance together with their guests. Color slides of previous meets were shown and prizes of Model A parts awarded. Being a relatively small Club at the outset, the meetings were more personal and interesting, calling one another on a first name basis and being familiar with his car. For the first few years after its inception, our Club met monthly at an individual members' home and as might be expected, the respective wife was responsible for the refreshments served to the group. Oddly enough, this presented quite a challenge for the "little woman", as she tried to meet the standard set by the previous hostess or in some instances, try to outdo her. Thereafter, there was a real incentive to attend the meeting - it was an event to look forward to, not only for the agenda, but also for the culinary delight. As a result, our Club grew rapidly, as word spread quickly throughout the area. It became more and more difficult to hold the entire membership under one roof. Needless to say, members' wives began to rebel for being subjected to accommodate the many hungry appetites. This marked the end of a pleasurable era! I volunteered the use of my business garage in Easthampton for one meeting to help alleviate the above situation. It became obvious that we needed a permanent location. On February 3, 1964, the Western Mass. Model A Club moved to its first new home at the Fairview Auditorium which proved advantageous because of its central location, facilities and modest rental. In May of 1963, Our Western Mass. Club was invited to TV Station Channel 22 on Provin Mountain for a feature on Tom Colton's evening show. We welcomed the great publicity and time which we had and the film interviewing our members and showing our cars moving about, was excellent. Of course, I wasn't nervous, I merely thanked Tom Colton for being "our guest"! The more enjoyable aspect of the Club then, was its interesting meets, some of the better ones included the following: The Lake Wyola Meet hosted by John and Gen Krawczyk, a gourmet's delight for many years, always to be remembered by the members and never surpassed by any other. Truly one of the annual summer highlights! The Summer home of Herb and Jeanette Langdon, a perfect setting in the woods on Otis Lake for an afternoon picnic, with boating and swimming on the agenda. Favorite dishes and salads were brought, together with surprise goodies of the hostess, all of which were shared and enjoyed. Many older members will remember Bob Brown's famous "homemade pancakes" with Vermont Maple Syrup, prepared by Bob himself at his Summer camp. The Trolley Museum at Warehouse Point, Conn. Which included a picturesque ride on the antique trolley for a nominal fee. A Chicken Barbecue at Steamtown, U.S.A. in Bellows Falls, Vermont followed by a fun 26 mile ride on the old steam train through Vermont's mountain countryside. In September of 1963 Warren Christenson and I as officers represented our Club at the Connecticut Club - sponsored New England Meet at the Jug End Barn at South Egremont, Mass. Being our 1st New England Meet, we really had fun and after all these years, Still enjoy a private joke stemming from that weekend! In July of 1964, the Club gave Warren and Gert Paul a terrific send-off when they were leaving to attend the National Meet of MARC, in Louisville, Kentucky over the July 4th weekend. We voted to underwrite $50 toward their gas bill before they embarked on their two week, 2500 mile trip in their Model A Roadster. The newspaper clipping read "Louisville or Bust!" During this same year, Frank Marzano introduced ideas for the Club decal, one of which was unanimously accepted, "The Flying Quail" which is still in general use and a popular Club symbol. Upon reflection of these two terms in the office as President of one of the more active antique car clubs, I feel that a great deal was accomplished during these early years, which has prevailed and progressed up to the present. I, personally, value the wonderful experience gained from this venture, to say nothing of the exciting challenge which it presented, as well as, the lasting friendships acquired with some of the finest personalities to be found in the best of organizations anywhere!" "During my first year in Office in 1965, there were two outstanding events that took place. The first was our attendance at the Ninth Annual New England Model A Meet. This meet was held at the Jug End Barn in Egremont, Massachusetts. This was the first time that we attended this event as a Club. The second one was our determination to produce our own monthly publication which we called "The Mascot".

We also agreed to put on the Tenth Annual New England Meet which was held at the Highpoint Motor Inn at Chicopee Falls, Mass., in September of 1966. Our Club had a membership of 85 persons at that time who owned approximately 120 Model A Fords. It is worth mentioning that the price of our Annual Banquet that year was $4.50 per person.

In 1966, we adopted the "Area Group" concept in our Club. This allowed for better communication concerning Club activities by establishing geographical areas within the total area covered by our Club. As outgoing President, I was elected Club Historian, a position that I still hold.

"It is with a great deal of difficulty that I am trying to write this segment for our Twentieth Anniversary Publication. Ed was a very good friend to me as to all some knew him. Back when he was President of the Club he was very active in his own business. This meant that he often, at the last minute, could neither write his President's message for The Mascot or even preside at meetings. I would take over both tasks for him whenever I could, as I am humbly doing for him now. Somehow it is not the same for he is not with us to defend himself. In the old days whenever I said things over his signature he could defend himself and blast me for it. Now he cannot for he has passed away these many years.

While Ed was President as well as for years before and after, he was a hard worker with a keen interest in furthering the direction the Club was taking. He not only gave freely of his time for Club affairs but also gave freely of his personal and company equipment for the Club members. No one ever asked Ed's help who did not get it in some measure and if you really needed something he had and he knew of it then it was yours.

I like mostly to remember Ed Nadok when he presided over the many committees he chaired. He was a man of superb organizational ability and direction, of overwhelming hospitality and charm that made everyone want to work harder. It was a privilege to know and be with him. He left us far to soon."

"It often amazes me how difficult it is to try and recall specific events that occurred just those few short years ago. Taking the reins of leadership from Ed Nadok who preceded me as President of our Club for two years was a challenge.

Membership continued to grow, that success attributable to fine people in the organization willing to get their friends and others interested in our rewarding hobby. We weren't without some problems however. The Fairview Auditorium was not always available to us that year so we were forced to hold our meeting elsewhere. I recall that the American Legion Post 275 in Chicopee Falls and the Polish-American Club on Route 202, Granby, were used during that year.

Perhaps the most enjoyable event of that year was the New England Meet sponsored by our own Club. It was a most successful meet organized by especially competent individuals (all volunteers) and was held at the Highpoint Motor Inn at Chicopee. I also believe that this was the first year of displaying cars at the Eastfield Mall, an event that was both enjoyable and financially rewarding to the Club. Each participant of that event was given a beautiful plaque designed by Frank Marzano. This plaque is mounted on a cabinet door in our kitchen and is admired daily.

Perhaps the greatest thing gained from that year as President of our Club was the wonderful times and memories that have been had. Vickie, the children and I will never forget the many friendships attained during our association with the wonderful people of our Club.
